Rating California Zinfandels from Napa Valley, Paso Robles, Sonoma and other regions.
2005 Howell Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Napa Valley; 15.5% alc., $24 A gentle, beautiful, round, classy Zinfandel from one of Napa Valley's most respected Zinfandel producers. Wonderful mouth feel with attractive notes of warm spice - cinnamon and clove. Velvety tannins and superb balance. Highly recommended. 2005 Toucan Zinfandel Arroyo Grande Valley; 14.7% alc., $32 Outstanding Zinfandel. Very dark cool ruby color. Deep nose of raspberry and sweet fruits with attractive notes of wild herbs, pepper and smoke. Very full-bodied and complex. Bright on the palate, with a pleasant salty tang. A very distinctive Zinfandel made from cuttings from the famous Benito Dusi vineyard in Paso Robles. Long, penetrating finish. One of the best current Zinfandels and highly recommended. 2005 Silver Stone Zinfandel Paso Robles; 16.2% alc., $24 Amazing! One of the best examples of artisanal Zinfandel we've seen. Attractive aromas of dusty cherry, marzipan, coconut, caramel and clove. Similar flavors follow. Very complex and smooth drinking. Silver Stone's Paso Robles Zinfandel received the highest rating from every taster on our 12-member panel. And at a suggested retail price of $24, the best value as well. Very highly recommended. 2004 Rotta Estate Zinfandel Giubbini Vineyard; 15.1% alc., $27 A true heritage Zinfandel from one of Paso Robles' oldest vineyards and made in a more traditional style, despite it's 15.1% alcohol level. Garnet color with an attractive nose of citrus and marzipan. Very nice chewy texture clothes a core of ripe red fruits, spice, anise and herbs. Not overly sweet. Restrained and balanced. An elegant Zinfandel that will provide an excellent accompaniment to many foods. Recommended. 2002 Turley Zinfandel Paso Robles Pesenti Vineyard; $60 Another single-vineyard Zinfandel made from old vine fruit. Brilliant nose of citrus, spice, wild berries, black fruits and manzanita. A polished and elegant Zinfandel with a delicate but long finish. Highly recommended. 2005 Kokomo Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley Perotti Vineyard; 14.9% alc., $22 A wonderful and satisfying Zinfandel, full of the peppery blackberry, spice and mineral notes so typical of Dry Creek. Distinctive, rich and not overly sweet. Soft, but noticeable tannins add a pleasant textural element. Very long dry finish. A wine for sipping and reflection. Enjoy it with chocolate! 2004 Marr Zinfandel Sonoma County; $25 Mouth-filling, varietally true Zinfandel with excellent balance between spicy, rich blackberry, strong red raspberry fruit and bright acids. Restrained and complementary oak influences. Velvet tannins and wonderful briary notes add layers of interest. A complex and distinctive Zinfandel, well worth seeking out. Highly recommended.
